Visual Communication

Communication is crucial for all species and visual communication is just one of the many modalities. I study physiological and behavioral variability between species and how these differences influence communicative behaviors.

Communication in

fireflies

One of my current projects looks at visual communication patterns in synchronous species of fireflies, primarily Photuris frontalis, but also Photinus carolinus and other species. I am conducting playback experiments with these fireflies to explore their constraints and preferences in group synchronization.

Anatomical visual acuity of fireflies

I am also looking at the visual acuity of fireflies based on the anatomy of their compound eyes. This project encompasses more than 10 different North American fireflies, including fireflies in the Photuris, Photinus, Pyropyga, an Phausis genera.
