Volunteering & Outreach

I strongly believe  that science outreach and education is crucial for a better future, not just for the college students I teach, but also for younger students. My volunteer work tends to focus on STEM youth programs, animal education, and other conservation work.

Recent activities

Zoo Knoxville

I started as a volunteer at Zoo Knoxville in 2023. I primarily worked with the conservation science department on their African elephant shade study. I also collaborated with the education department to develop an interpretation station on bird calls and noise pollution. Other service included assisting during the 2023 AZA herpetology TAG meeting.

gSTEM mentorship

gSTEM is an after school science program put on by YO-STEM, targeted towards middle school girls in underserved schools. As a mentor, I led the students in simple science experiments like making homemade ice cream and pinhole cameras, and separating hydrogen and oxygen with electrolysis.

ZooCrew

I worked with the Zoo Knoxville education department to develop and present an animal behavior research workshop for their teen conservation camp. Dr. Todd Freeberg and I led approximately 20 high school students through various behavioral experiments and techniques with Dubia cockroaches. At the end of the session students developed their own research questions and tested them.
